An Alternative Campsite and Hostel in Bulgaria

Bulgaria

I’m not even going to try to give a tourist guide to Bulgaria! I haven’t travelled as much around the country as I intend to so you’ll have to do some reading for yourself. What I can say is that this country has a long and very interesting history that seems to have involved long periods when they were in not in charge of their own destiny. After the fall of communism, there was a fairly easy transition to democracy with a very pro-active Socialist government. But it appears that without the appropriate checks and balances in place, power and money went to many people’s head and major corruption set in.

There is a tremendous level of apathy and cynicism about government in general and about the EU. For a useful potted history and an update on the recent political system, the Rough Guide is good. I will add more links as I come across them.

This is a small country, although bigger than the UK, but with a population of under 7 million. The countryside is stunning and very accessible. There are miles and miles of forests, mountains in the south (which are also suitable for skiing in the winter), lovely beaches, a lovely climate and great food.

As I feel more confident about history and current politics I will add to this page but I guess that as you’re already reading the site, you must be interested in Bulgaria!
